The local press announced on January 27 that the public oil company (NNPC) presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the institution which supervises the federal ministries, a request for a provision of 7.2 billion dollars. According to the details of Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and Planning and member of the FEC, this sum is intended to cover the subsidy for petroleum products for 2022.

The Nigerian executive has been trying to put an end to the budget-intensive system of subsidies for petroleum products for more than 10 years, without success, because the risks that this will jeopardize social peace are high. Zainab Ahmed explains that the NNPC's request is justified by the difficulties that Nigerians face in accessing petroleum products. She indicated that the Council instructed her ministry to initiate an amendment procedure at parliamentary level.
