Mali wants to regain its place as the leading cotton producer in Africa. Installed on August 5, 2021, the new office of the Confederation of Cotton Producers of Mali held its first meeting in the city of Koutialia on Thursday August 19.

Following the recommendations of the national meetings of the sector, the government agreed, in addition to the fertilizer subsidy, to an increase in the purchase price of cotton from 250 to 280 CFA francs per kilo before export. “Around September 22, we will start harvesting. This is one of the first times that the price of cotton has been fixed at 280 CFA francs per kilo. This incentive makes us happy and pushes us to resume production this year,” said Bakary Koné, President of the Confederation of Cotton Producers. According to figures from the Confederation of Cotton Growers, 810,000 hectares have been sown. The objective is to go to a million tons, or even more, but, like the earth, no one has 100% control over the yield, whatever the case, God willing, Mali will not go down this year below 800,000 tonnes, he concludes.
