As cotton continues to hold up despite inflation, gold fell Monday to its lowest level since mid-April at $1,750.75 before recovering as the week progressed.

The commodity market remains gloomy on the outlook for the precious metal. While investors are worried about a possible return of inflation, the safe haven par excellence suffered in May its biggest drop since November 2016. Gold remains relatively stable, after a difficult month of June. Tighter Fed monetary policy makes the dollar more attractive. And since the American currency is also a safe haven, the happiness of the greenback is the misfortune of the yellow metal. Around 3:50 p.m. GMT (5:50 p.m. in Paris), an ounce of gold traded for 1,783.45 dollars, against 1,781.44 dollars the previous Friday at the end of the session.

The price of copper fell over the week as investors bet on higher inflation lessening their bet. Copper, which is used to make electrical cables for industries as varied as automotive, real estate and household appliances, is particularly dependent on industrial indicators. A ton of copper cost 9,380 dollars on the London Metal Exchange around 3:50 p.m. GMT, against 9,413.50 dollars the previous Friday at the end of trading.

Cotton prices were stable this week but remained at high levels, close to the previous annual high reached in February. The pound of cotton for December delivery in New York was worth 86.99 cents on Friday around 3:50 p.m. GMT (5:50 p.m. in Paris), against 87.18 cents at the close last Friday.
