The Zungeru hydropower plant (700 MW) will finally go into production in the first quarter of 2022. The announcement was made at the beginning of the year by Li Xiao Ming, deputy director of the project.

The start of production of the Zungeru plant, scheduled for December 2021, has been delayed. Li Xiao Ming, deputy director of the project announces that it will be effective in the first quarter of 2022. The first turbine of the Zungeru hydroelectric power plant, under construction since 2013 in the State of Niger, will enter service during the first quarter of 2022. This project would immediately add 175 MW of electricity to the country's generation capacity. With its 700 MW capacity, it will then be the second largest hydroelectric power station in Nigeria, after Kainji (760 MW). This new plant, which cost $1.3 billion, should cover 10% of Nigeria's domestic energy needs.
