The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), managed by the African Development Bank, has approved a $1 million grant to facilitate Botswana's transition. This financial package aims to support the country in clean energy.

The Technical Assistance Project is providing support to the Government of Botswana to address critical gaps in policy, regulatory and legal frameworks identified during the Africa Energy Market Place (AEMP 2019). These include the introduction of least cost planning, reduction of adverse environmental impacts and support for increased private sector participation in investments in renewable energy generation.

Among other things, the project is expected to produce a national grid code, a study on the cost of electricity service (CoSS) and a licensing framework to regulate the activities of the electricity sector. The results will contribute to the implementation of Botswana's first Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), thereby facilitating investment in new solar, photovoltaic and wind power generation capacity, to reach at least 100 MW and 50 MW respectively.
