Superconducting quantum computers are huge and incredibly delicate machines. An Australian-German company is developing powerful quantum accelerators the size of a graphics card.

Quantum accelerators operate at room temperature, allowing them to outperform today's massive cryogenically cooled quantum supercomputers, and they will soon be small enough for mobile devices. They must be isolated from anything that could disrupt an electron's spin and ruin a calculation. This includes mechanical isolation, in extreme vacuum chambers, where only a few molecules can survive in a cubic meter or two of space. With this technology, it will be possible to embed the benefits of quantum into computers of any size, freeing this powerful new technology from the constraints of supercomputer size and cost. Software and quantum calculations will not need to be done through a fast connection to a mainframe or the cloud, they will be done on-premises, where they are needed. It's quite disturbing.
