After an increase of 3.1% in the first quarter, the gross value added of the primary sector increased by 3.9% in the second quarter of 2021.

The 2020/2021 agricultural campaign ended with food production amounting to 69,075,960 tonnes, up 4.5% compared to the previous campaign. According to the Bceao, this increase in harvests is driven by that of cereals (+1,405,826 tonnes, or +4.6%), other crops (1,000,348 tonnes, or +8.7%) and tubers (+ 568,230 tonnes, i.e. +2.3%). Compared to the average of the last five years, harvests for the 2020/2021 agricultural campaign are up by 13.3%. The groundnut harvest stood at 3,779,861 tonnes, up 9.1% compared to the 2019/2020 campaign, due to the good spatial and temporal distribution of rains in the majority of Member States of the Union. Cashew nut production amounted to 1,300,322 tons during the 2020/2021 campaign, up 19.7% compared to the previous campaign.
