The volume of cumulative transactions carried out through EMIs (electronic money institutions) in the WAEMU zone stood at 34,914.8 billion FCFA at the end of 2020, against 25,470.8 billion FCFA at the end of 2019, a sharp increase by 37.1%.

The supply of financial services backed by mobile telephony is experiencing extraordinary expansion among the populations of the WAEMU zone. Payments made from electronic wallets during the period under review concern, in order of importance, cash reloading operations (12,714 billion FCFA), cash withdrawal (10,138.1 billion FCFA), cash transfer (5,794.8 billion FCFA), intra-UEMOA transfer (1,625.5 billion FCFA), telephone top-up (522.3 billion FCFA). Transactions with public administrations (450 billion FCFA), salary payments (303 billion FCFA), merchant payments (275.3 billion FCFA), bill payments (190.6 billion FCFA) as well as other services ( 2,901 billion FCFA).
