Benin and its neighbor Togo can now implement a contiguous cross-border intervention to combat the advanced degradation of their coastline. The World Bank has approved additional financing of 36 million dollars from the International Development Association (IDA), or 19.89 billion FCFA for the two countries.

The new financing approved by the World Bank provides additional resources to the West African Coastal Management Program (WACA) for physical investments to combat coastal erosion in Benin and Togo. Thus, thanks to the special IDA funds for regional integration, Benin and Togo can jointly design and implement a contiguous cross-border intervention to protect the coast.

In Benin, the work will include the filling of the arms of the abandoned lagoons east of the mouth at Grand-Popo, the construction of protective groynes, the installation of a 6.4 million cubic meter refill of sand in Agoué, and the construction of cycle paths and car parks in Agoué and Hillacondji. In Togo, it will be a question of the construction and extension of the groynes at Agbodrafo and Aného, the filling of the arms of the abandoned lagoons east of the mouth at Aneho, as well as the construction of cycle paths and car parks at Agbodrafo and Sanve-Condji.
