The Togo cotton campaign report shows that 2020-2021 production recorded 66,000 tons of seed cotton compared to 117,000 tons in the previous season. The annual decrease is estimated at 43%.

The deficit recorded is said to be due to weather hazards, poor seed quality and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, at the beginning of the health crisis, the country announced a “Covid-19 agricultural response plan” to support the agricultural sector against the impacts of the virus, with the objective of achieving 225,000 tons of cotton production by the end of the campaign. The campaign was also marked by the acquisition of 51% of the shares in the New Togo Cotton Company (NSCT) by the Singaporean group Olam, which paid 22 billion CFA francs (approximately 41 million USD) for the operation.
The objective of this sale is to double yields, in particular by exploiting the soil fertility map, to modernize industrial facilities throughout the chain from production to processing, and to develop the “cotton made in Togo” brand in order to benefit from a price differential in relation to quality.
