The total revenue loss for African airlines is estimated at $10.21 billion by AFRAA. The resumption rate of international flights in March 2021 is 64.2%.
The capacity offered by airlines remains below the 2019 level before the pandemic. The resumption rate of international flights in March 2021 is 64.2% compared to the level in February 2019 before Covid-19.
Faced with the difficulties, players in the sector are asking governments and development financial institutions for financial support for airlines. Unfortunately, according to Abderahmane Berthé, Secretary General of AFRAA, financial support for airlines is slow to materialize despite promises.
“In January 2021, we recorded that nine (09) African governments have granted financial support totaling USD 2.456 billion to the air transport sector. Unfortunately, these amounts have been allocated to companies in which the States are shareholders, leaving the private sector behind,” he explains.
To restore the image of the sector, it is important to: continue efforts to obtain financial support for airlines to facilitate their recovery; implement ICAO CART recommendations to enhance health security and restore passenger confidence; improve cooperation between airlines for better connectivity, lower costs and increase revenues and provide advice and capacity building support to airlines and the industry as a whole.
