According to the Ghanaian Minister of Employment and Vocational Inclusion, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah (photo), the
unemployment rate in the country fell from 11.9% in 2015 to 7.1% in 2019. This corresponds to a
reduction of 4.8 points in 4 years.
For Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, this drop in the unemployment rate is the result of certain priority actions
of the Ghanaian government through, in particular, the Integrated Development Policy Program
economic and social policy (CSDP) and the national medium-term development policy (NMTDPF).
These various action plans have thus enabled the implementation of various social integration programs
such as: “Planting to feed and create jobs”, “One district, one factory”, “the body of builders of
the nation ". Added to this is the reform of vocational training and the Agency's modules for
youth employment.
The Ghanaian Minister of Employment also indicated that a total of 611,397 new jobs will
were created in the formal sector in 4 years. This, at the rate of 343,458 new jobs in the sector
public and 267,939 new jobs in the formal private sector.
However, as Ignatius Baffour-Awuah points out, the informal economy continues to dominate the market
employment in Ghana, with 85% of jobs compared to 15% for the formal sector. Thus, the public sector
accounts for only 7% of jobs in the country, while the formal private sector stands at 8%.
