On September 9, 2020, the BRVM experienced a transaction of 12.3 billion FCFA. This rare volume of daily activity on this market is justified by a trading game called "bought-sold" on the shares of Coris Bank.

A trading game on shares of the banking group Coris Bank based in Burkina Faso enabled the Regional Stock Exchange (BRVM) of Abidjan to experience a daily transaction volume of around 12.3 billion FCFA, i.e. a one-day record for this financial market.

A market release explained this situation. 99% of this volume was made on the shares of Coris Bank, through what is called “bought-sold”. It is a technique used by investors holding an equity security to make effective a gain or loss realized on the value of a listed company's share. In this case, the stock is sold and bought back at the same time to make the goal possible.

It is difficult to comment on the motivations for this transaction. The BRVM press release providing this information does not provide any additional details. Transaction data on the Abidjan Stock Exchange indicates that on August 27, 2020, Coris Bank shares reached their lowest level since the beginning of the year, and accumulated a loss of 10.7%. Between that date and September 4, 2020, it increased by 9.17%.

When the “bought-sold” operation has taken place, the gain in value compared to August 27 is 7%. But at the same time, the loss in value since the beginning of the year is 3.7%.

It is unclear which of the investors carried out this operation. It is not so obvious to establish that the objective is to consolidate the capital gain realized between the end of August and the beginning of September, or that it is a question of consolidating and confirming the loss in value conceded since the beginning of the year.
