During the third quarter of 2019, the value added generated by the secondary sector increased in
annual rate of 8.3%, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous quarter and 0.3
point compared to the same period of the previous year. According to the Bceao which gives the information in its
"Report on Monetary Policy in Umoa - December 2019", the business climate indicator in
the secondary sector is up one point compared to the previous quarter and remains above its
long-term trend, reflecting high levels of confidence among business leaders in the
industries in the orientation of their activity.
“The industrial production index rose 8.6%, year-on-year, in the third quarter
2019, after 6.3% achieved three months earlier. This acceleration is mainly attributable to the evolution of the
pace of growth in manufacturing production (+9.7% vs. +7.0%), in line with the increase in
the production of food products, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire. It was reinforced by the increase in the
energy production (+11.8% against +10.1%), mainly in Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Mali.
observed trend was attenuated by the decline in the rate of increase in extractive production (+4.1%
against +5.1%) in particular crude oil and uranium ores mainly in Niger”, we read in the
document consulted by the Senegalese Economy Journal (Lejecos). According to the same source, the value
added created in the tertiary sector increased by 6.9%, at an annual rate, in the third quarter of 2019,
against 6.7% in the second quarter of 2019.
Compared to the previous quarter, the business climate indicator remained above its
long-term trend, driven mainly by the optimism of business leaders in the "
Merchant services" on the orientation of their turnover and the improvement of their
cash flow (+2 points). The rate of increase in the turnover index in market services
(excluding financial services) increased to 5.2% in the third quarter of 2019 against 4.0% in
second quarter of 2019, driven in particular by information and communication services as well as
real estate services. Regarding the index of activities in financial services, it recorded a
growth of 9.1% during the period under review, against +7.5% noted a quarter earlier, online
in particular with the increase in the volume of banking transactions (loans, deposits).
