Ukraine: Mariupol fighters make desperate appeal, Kiev receives fighter jets
Ukraine has received fighter jets to help counter the Russian offensive in the east of the country, where the last Ukrainian fighters entrenched in Mariupol have made a desperate appeal to the international community to be rescued. "We may be living in our last days, if not our last hours," said a commander of Ukrainian military besieged in Mariupol, a strategic port in southeastern Ukraine that Moscow has vowed to take control of. "The enemy outnumbers us ten to one," Serguiy Volyna of the 36th Brigade of the National Navy said on Facebook. "We call and beg all world leaders to help us. We ask them to use the extraction procedure and take us to the territory of a third country."
Russia, for its part, claims to have opened a corridor that is supposed to allow Ukrainian forces who have decided to surrender to leave Mariupol. However, on Tuesday evening, the Russian army deplored the fact that "nobody" had used this humanitarian corridor. The latter will be reopened again on Wednesday from 11:00 GMT, according to the same source.
Israeli raids in Gaza after a rocket attack, meeting at the UN
The Israeli air force conducted strikes against the Gaza Strip, the first in three months, in retaliation for a rocket attack from the Palestinian enclave, against a backdrop of escalation in recent weeks. At the end of a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the Israeli-Palestinian violence, five European countries said in a joint statementIn a joint statement, five European countries said that "the violence must stop immediately" and "the status quo of the holy places must be fully respected". Early in the morning, the Israeli army said it had bombed a weapons site of Hamas, the armed Islamist movement ruling the Gaza Strip, a poor territory where about 2.3 million Palestinians live under an Israeli blockade. The strikes did not cause any casualties.
The raids followed a rocket fired Monday night from Gaza into southern Israel. The rocket was nevertheless intercepted by the Israeli missile shield. The violence comes amid ongoing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, compounded by four attacks in Israel between March 22 and April 7, which killed a total of 14 people.
Netflix loses subscribers for the first time in a decade
After years of winning users at high speed, streaming giant Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers worldwide in the first quarter compared to the end of 2021, the first time it has lost subscribers in more than a decade. And it expects to lose even more in the spring. The news sent the stock tumbling 25% Tuesday in after-hours trading on the New York Stock Exchange. To restore the situation, the pioneer of the sector intends first of all to tighten the screw on the side of the shares of identifiers and passwords, which allow many people not to pay for access to the platform. And invest more and more in the production of content to not give up too much ground to the competition, such as Disney+, which has been a hit since its launch in late 2019. The industry pioneer had expected to gain 2.5 million additional subscribers - and analysts expected even more - but instead lost some, bringing its total to 221.64 million subscriptions.
