The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union (EU) are working to curb the phenomenon of maritime insecurity in the West African sub-region. In this context, a high-level seminar on the issue was held in Abuja, Nigeria from Monday to Tuesday, April 05, 2022.

The seminar organized by the ECOWAS Commission and financed by the European Union should result in the supply to the coastal countries of ECOWAS of equipment worth 5.4 million euros. The initiative is part of the West Africa Integrated Maritime Security Support Project (SWAIMS). According to the ECOWAS statement, a total of 30 Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) will be provided to help ECOWAS member coastal states to combat maritime insecurity. Boats and forensic equipment will be provided to ECOWAS coastal countries by Portuguese IP. Camões, in close collaboration with the Portuguese Navy which will also provide training and maintenance.
