Last December, a Paris appeals court reduced UBS's fine to 1.8 billion euros ($2 billion) for helping wealthy French clients evade taxes. The court also confirmed that the Swiss bank was guilty of both promoting illegal banking services and money laundering.
According to the Swiss bank's annual report, published on Monday, civil damages were paid to the French state (of which 99 million euros were deducted from the deposit), subject to the outcome of UBS's appeal. UBS has made some 1.1 billion euros in legal provisions to settle the case, which it stressed remains subject to a "wide range of possible outcomes". UBS could recover its civil damages payment depending on the decision of the French Supreme Court.
