Senegal, in its ambition to become a sub-regional port hub, is carrying out work to modernize the port of Dakar. For the facilities dedicated to transit traffic, the works will soon be completed with the delivery of Pier 3 announced for the end of May 2022.

The second phase of modernization work on Pier 3 of the port of Dakar could be completed next May, according to Mbaye Fall, technical adviser to the port. Pier 3, an infrastructure dedicated to goods in transit, in this case those bound for Mali, was built before 1970 (more than half a century), and no longer meets current standards in terms of port infrastructure and traffic management.

Its upgrade, financed at nearly 22 billion FCFA ($38 million) by Japan through the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), aims to make it capable of handling ships 190 meters long, with a critical capacity 35,000 tons.
