Ukraine: Scholz expected in kyiv, tensions at their height

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected in kyiv on Monday to continue diplomatic efforts to defuse the "critical" threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, which could trigger the worst crisis in Europe since the Cold War. Mr Scholz will then travel to Moscow on Tuesday, following in the footsteps of French President Emmanuel Macron last week, as the United States hungrily reminded that Russia could invade Ukraine "at any time" and the Westerners evacuate their embassies. Often accused of being too complacent towards Russia, Germany raised its voice on Sunday. "We are in the midst of a risk of military conflict, of war in Eastern Europe, and it is Russia that bears the responsibility," German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said. Mr. Scholz for his part warned that Western sanctions would be "immediate" in the event of a Russian invasion. Moscow "doesn't give a damn" about the sanctions, the Russian ambassador to Sweden, Viktor Tatarintsev, had bluntly warned a few hours earlier in an interview with the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Protest in Canada: Police clear access to strategic bridge

Police cleared access to the Ambassador Bridge on Sunday, a strategic axis between the United States and Canada blocked since Monday by anti-sanitary measures protesters, a first step welcomed by Washington, but the protesters did not let go through the country, especially in the capital Ottawa. A large contingent of tougher police made numerous arrests throughout the day and cleared the road leading to the bridge, but traffic had not resumed by late afternoon. A national security adviser to President Joe Biden, Liz Sherwood-Randall, said Canadian authorities "intend to reopen the Ambassador Bridge" on Sunday after completing the necessary security checks. She expressed Washington's appreciation "for the determined efforts of (Canadian) law enforcement along the border to bring about the complete lifting of the blockades." Washington had exerted some pressure on the Canadian government by asking it last week to use “federal powers” to end a blockage having “serious consequences” on the American economy because of the importance of borrowing exchanges. this bridge.

IN SHORT

Children should "very likely" be able to remove the mask inside the school "before the end of the school year", indicated the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer, considering "eminently desirable" that they can withdraw it "as soon as possible".

Marseille strengthened its second place in Metz (2-1), exploiting the misstep of Nice, third threatened by Strasbourg (1-0 in Angers), in a Ligue 1 to which Saint-Etienne clings and where Bordeaux, new red lantern, does not come out of it.
