The Eurostoxx 50 opens at 4,054.36 points (-4.14%), the CAC 40 at 6,787.79 points (-3.97%), the DAX 40 at 15,011.13 points (-3.80% ), the FTSE 100 at 7,297.15 points (-2.63%), the SMI at 11,881.30 points (-3.84%), the AEX at 738.66 points (-3.28%), the BEL 20 at 3,993.65 points (-3.74%), IBEX 35 at 8,417.80 points (-3.18%), DJIA at 34,364.50 points (+0.29%), Nasdaq at 13,855.13 points (+0.63%), the S&P 500 at 4,410.13 points (+0.28%) and the Nikkei 225 at 27,131.34 points (-1.66%).
Regarding exchange rates, the change from the close in New York indicates that EUR/USD opens at 1.1312 (-0.12%), EUR/JPY at 128.68 (-0.31%) and USD/JPY at 113.77 (-0.19%).
European equity markets are expected to open higher on Tuesday, following Wall Street's dramatic rally late in trading the day before. However, the prospect of a tightening of monetary policy by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) and geopolitical tensions around Ukraine continue to prompt investors to be cautious. At 7:45 a.m., the CAC 40 futures contract gained 68 points, or 1%, according to data from broker IG Markets. The contract on the DAX 40 took 140 points, or 0.9%, and that on the FTSE 100 won 47 points, or 0.7%.
The US markets experienced another very volatile session on Monday, with the indices finally finishing in the green after falling sharply during the session. The Dow Jones Index (DJIA) gained 0.3% to 34,366 points, after dropping up to 1,100 points during the session. The broader S&P 500 index was also up 0.3%, at 4,410.41 points. After losing up to 5% in session, the Nasdaq index ended up 0.6%. Tuesday morning, futures on major US equity indices fell, suggesting that Wall Street could find itself under pressure again on Tuesday. Volatility has increased in recent sessions as the Fed's monetary policy committee meets on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In Asia, the main stock market indices fell on Tuesday. In Tokyo, the Nikkei index closed down 1.7%. Technology conglomerate SoftBank notably lost 5.3%, while Sony lost 2.9%. The Hang Seng of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange dropped 1.7% at the end of the session, the banks HSBC and Standard Chartered both yielding around 3%. The Shanghai Composite index dropped 1.9% at the same time.
The yield on the ten-year US Treasury bond, the market benchmark, fell on Tuesday morning to 1.760% against 1.771% on Monday evening. In recent weeks, several Fed officials have signaled that full employment has been achieved for now, at least until the labor force participation rate begins to improve, which they consider as a long-term possibility.
The euro retreated against the dollar and the yen on Tuesday morning as investors favored assets deemed safe amid lingering concerns over the Federal Reserve's monetary policy tightening and rising geopolitical tensions. Deutsche Bank, however, raised its forecast for the euro-dollar exchange rate, as the financial intermediary expects the European Central Bank (ECB) to raise interest rates sooner than expected. Deutsche Bank thinks the euro will sit at $1.15 at the end of 2022, down from a previous forecast of $1.08. The bank expects the euro to be worth 1.20 dollars at the end of 2023, at 1.25 dollars at the end of 2024 and at 1.30 dollars at the end of 2025. On Tuesday morning, the single currency is trading at 1.1316 dollars .
Crude oil futures rose Tuesday morning, buoyed by market tensions and geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine, ING said. At 7:35 a.m., the March North Sea Brent contract was up 64 cents, at $86.92 a barrel. The same expiry contract on WTI took 50V cents, at 83.81 dollars a barrel.
