At least 53 irregular migrants, mostly from Guatemala, were killed Thursday in a truck accident in southern Mexico, a country more than ever caught between migratory pressure from its poor southern neighbors and the firmness of States -United. "So far 53 people have died and three others have been seriously injured," the public prosecutor's office said in a statement. An initial assessment reported 49 dead, 40 injured, three of them seriously, and 18 people more lightly affected in this accident near Tuxtla Gutierrez, capital of the state of Chiapas (south) bordering Guatemala. The migrants were crammed into the trailer of a truck, according to the first explanations to the Civil Protection press. The speeding truck reportedly overturned after hitting a wall. The truck was carrying "more than 100 people of various nationalities", the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) in Mexico City said in a statement.
