Climate: CO2 emissions almost at pre-Covid record levels

The Covid crisis will have been only a parenthesis for the climate and global emissions of CO2, the main greenhouse gas, have started up again, leaving less and less time to counter global warming, warns a study Thursday. The pandemic had shut down much of the world and its economy heavily dependent on fossil fuels, leading to a dramatic 5.4% drop in total emissions in 2020. But in 2021, they are expected to rebound by 4.9%. to get closer to less than 1% of the absolute record of 2019, according to this study by the Global carbon project, published on the occasion of COP26. This group of international scientists studies global carbon "budgets", i.e. the amount of CO2 that can be emitted for a given result. Because despite the promises of "green" post-Covid recovery plans, this recovery is mainly done with fossil fuels: emissions due to coal should thus exceed their level of 2019, that is to say before the crisis of the Covid, although below their all-time high in 2014, and those due to gas reach their all-time high.

Cervical cancer: a vaccine seems to clearly limit the risks

Cases of cervical cancer of the uterus have particularly declined among British women who have received a vaccine against the papillomavirus infection, the cause of these cancers, finds a study published Thursday. "Our study provides the first direct evidence of the effect of vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV), via the bivalent vaccine Cervarix, on the frequency of cervical cancer", summarize the authors of this work published in the Lancet. Cancers of the cervix are almost always caused by a sexually transmitted infection with the papillomavirus. Since the mid-2000s, vaccines have been available against it.
