Morocco has significantly improved its score last year in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing in the MENA region. Despite this, the country still presents great risks. In this year's edition, The Basel Institute ranks Morocco 51st in the world out of 110 countries. The Kingdom thus obtains a score of 5.32 out of 10. The authors of the report point out, in this regard, that the more the score tends towards 10, the greater the risk of money laundering and terrorist financing. Compared to last year, Morocco would have improved its score by reducing the risks of money laundering and terrorist financing.
The institute measures, in fact, through its classification, the risk of money laundering and terrorist financing. Risk, as measured by the index, is defined as a jurisdiction's vulnerability to these two scourges and its ability to counter them. Risk scores are based on data from publicly available sources such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Transparency International, World Bank and World Economic Forum. They cover 17 indicators in five areas relevant to assessing the risk of money laundering and terrorist financing at the jurisdictional level, namely the quality of the framework for combating money laundering and terrorist financing, bribery and corruption, financial transparency and standards, public transparency and accountability, and legal and political risk.
