The London Stock Exchange is developing its contracts with African financial centers and in particular that of Johannesburg, via its financial engineering subsidiaries. In addition to Johannesburg, the LSEG has carried out several seduction missions in English-speaking Africa in recent years.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange wishes to strengthen its technical capacities and above all strengthen its reputation with large groups and foreign investors, who tend to shun it while South Africa is going through a major economic crisis. Through these contracts, the London Stock Exchange is getting closer to major African groups and governments, potential customers for their listings or their bond issues. The LSE thus plays on ambivalence, competing with the JSE as with the other major stock exchanges on the continent while offering them its services. The JSE is trying to tame its powerful rival and adviser, by providing the best possible framework for dual listings: a main one in London and a secondary one in Johannesburg.

In addition to Johannesburg, the LSEG has carried out several seduction missions in English-speaking Africa in recent years. By advising African stock exchanges, the LSEG is also strengthening its brand internationally and establishing itself as a reference in terms of stock market indexing, while Brexit has called into question its position as a European financial epicenter. Other major Western stock market groups are also playing on African soil to secure their place.
