Brazil: thousands of indigenous people march to the Supreme Court for their land

Thousands of indigenous people in traditional dress protested on Wednesday in Brasilia where the Supreme Court was expected to make a crucial ruling on their ancestral lands. Some 6,000 members of 170 tribes, many wearing feather headdresses and wielding bows and arrows, have left for the seat of Brazil's highest court, hoping to pressure its eleven judges. This is the largest indigenous demonstration ever organized in Brazil, according to the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib), which is coordinating the mobilization. Since Sunday, thousands of indigenous people with often painted bodies have set up tents, singing and dancing near the modernist buildings of the Presidential Palace, the Supreme Court and Parliament. These shimmering gatherings are currently taking place peacefully, with organizers calling on demonstrators not to confront riot police. In June, similar protests escalated. Three demonstrators were injured, along with three police officers, by arrows. The Court postponed its judgment concerning these ancestral lands until Thursday as soon as possible, as the discussion on another case dragged on Wednesday, the court learned.
