Benin continues its path towards the modernization of its customs administration. The ambition of the government of President Patrice Talon is to make the customs administration one of the most modern in the sub-region by 2022.

In order to make the port of Cotonou the largest hub, given its strategic position and to fight effectively against customs fraud and corruption, several actions have been undertaken in recent years to improve the business climate in Benin. These actions concern, among other things, the implementation of the Import Verification Program piloted by the technical partner Benin Control with the main tasks: control of the customs value of goods, tracking of goods in transit, inspection for certification of the weights and values of goods imported in bulk at the port of Cotonou and via land borders. It also includes the electronic tracking of used vehicles in transit, the control of cargo using X-ray scanners to increase the efficiency of customs administration, the dematerialization of customs clearance procedures through the installation of an electronic portal for all formalities relating to foreign trade transactions throughout the national territory (one-stop foreign trade window Guce) via the assistance of technical partner Webb Fontaine.
