Togo's cotton season report shows that 2020-2021 production recorded 66,000 tons of seed cotton compared to 117,000 tons for the previous season. The annual decrease is estimated at 43%.

The deficit recorded would be due to climatic hazards, poor seed quality and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, at the beginning of the health crisis, the country had announced a "Covid-19 Agricultural Response Plan" to support the agricultural sector in the face of the impacts of the virus, with a goal of reaching a production of 225,000 tons for cotton at the end of the season. The campaign was also marked by the acquisition of 51% of the shares of the New Cotton Company of Togo (NSCT) by the Singaporean group Olam which paid an amount of 22 billion CFA francs (about 41 million USD) for the operation.
This sale aims to double yields, in particular by exploiting the soil fertility map, to modernize the industrial tool throughout the chain from production to processing, and to develop the "cotton made in Togo" brand in order to enjoy a price differential compared to quality.
