The New York Stock Exchange closed in dispersed order on Wednesday. The Dow Jones blue chip index hitting a new high, while NASDAQ technology stocks fell slightly. According to final figures at the close, the Dow Jones ended up 0.29% at 34,230.34 points.
The NASDAQ, with strong technological coloring, which had dropped almost 2% the day before, still dropped 0.37% to 13,582.42 points. The S&P 500 remained almost stable, climbing 0.07% to 4167.59 points. The Toronto floor's S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 122.71 points to 19,310.74 points.
In the currency market, the Canadian dollar traded at an average rate of 81.49 cents US, up from its average rate of 81.20 cents US the previous day. On the New York Commodity Exchange, crude oil prices fell US$6 cents to US$65.63 a barrel, while gold rose US$8.30 to $1,784.30 US per ounce. The price of copper, for its part, rose 0.25 US cents to US$4.52 a pound.
Airline stocks rose like Delta (+1.19%), United Airlines (+0.89%) and American Airlines (+0.70%). Among the big tech names, Amazon (-1.25%), Microsoft (-0.53%) and Netflix (-1.41%) lost ground. The car rental company Uber ended the session down 3.42% before announcing a reduction in its quarterly loss. Its price rallied more than 1% in electronic trading after the close at $51.70.
