APA-Dakar (Senegal) By Massamba Sall Consumer prices in Senegal have risen
1.9% in August 2019 compared to the previous month, APA learned on Saturday from the Agency
National Statistics and Demography (ANSD).
The ANSD explains this development by the rise in the prices of food and beverages not
alcoholic beverages, clothing and footwear, health services, alcoholic beverages,
tobacco and narcotics, as well as "communication" services.
Food products and non-alcoholic beverages thus rose by 3.1% at the monthly rate of
particularly due to a rise in the prices of fresh fish (+18.3%), fresh fruit and root vegetables
(+15.0%), fresh leafy vegetables (+11.7%), other fresh fruits (+9.0%), as well as tubers and
plantains (+6.6%). “A fall in supply during the winter period is at the origin of this upward trend”,
underlines the ANSD.
Regarding the prices of clothing and footwear, they accelerated by 1.7% during the
period under review, in relation to an increase in those of men's outerwear
(+5.9%) and for women (+3.6%), women's shoes (+2.9%), as well as tailoring services
especially women's clothing (+0.9%).
As for the prices of health goods and services, the ANSD notes that they rose by 1.1%, following a
soaring prices of traditional medicines (+15.3%).
For their part, the prices of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics appreciated by 0.5%, under the effect
an increase in those of tobacco and narcotics (+0.9%), as well as beer (+0.2%).
The same is true for the prices of communication services, which rose by 0.5% compared to the month
previous year, due to an increase in those of telephone communication services (+0.8%).
An increase of 0.2% is noted in the prices of transport goods and services due to the
increase in the cost of passenger air transport services (+3.4%) and of spare parts and
accessories (+0.3%).
As for the prices of miscellaneous goods and services, the ANSD reports an increase of 0.2% in August 2019, in
mainly due to the increase in those of jewelery and watchmaking articles (+1.1%) and
other personal effects (+0.3%). In annual variation, they increased by 0.9%.
In terms of prices for housing services, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, there was a
evolution of +0.1% on a monthly basis, due to an increase in the price of products for maintenance and
routine repairs (+0.7%), as well as housing-related services (+0.4%).
The prices of furniture, household items and routine household maintenance rose by 0.1%, due to a
increase in those of other household utensils (+0.9%), as well as crockery and
glassware (+0.3%).
On the other hand, the prices of educational services and restaurants and hotels remained stable in the month
of August 2019.
According to the ANSD, the 0.1% drop in the prices of leisure and cultural services comes from that of the prices of books
books and other books (-0.3%), and also products for gardens, plants and flowers, pets
and related items (-0.9%).

Core inflation increased by 0.3% on a monthly basis and by 1.1% on an annual basis. The costs
local and imported products increased by 1.8% and 0.8% respectively in August 2019
compared to the previous month. In annual variation, the prices of local and imported products have
simultaneously increased by 0.6% and 1.8%.
In annual variation2, consumer prices increased by 1.3%. The average annual inflation rate
was, for its part, established at +0.9%.
