The government of Niger during its Council of Ministers on January 29, 2021 adopted a bill modifying the fisheries and aquaculture regime. The old law in force since 1998 and which governs fishing and aquaculture had many shortcomings with regard to the marketing of fish products as well as provisions relating to the quality control of these products, indicates the government to this effect. Moreover, this law did not take aquaculture into account.
The new law proposed by the executive not only corrects all these flaws, but also takes into account the directives set out by WAEMU. The new regulations should enable better management of Niger's fishery resources and promote the development of this sector.
