ARIS (Agefi-Dow Jones) --The dollar lost ground against major currencies on Friday, after the release of economic statistics showing the extent of the impact of the health crisis on the American labor market in December.

According to data released Friday by the Labor Department, the American economy destroyed 140,000 net jobs in December, compared with 336,000 jobs created in November. Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal expected 50,000 net jobs to be created in the United States in December. The number of jobs created in November was initially estimated at 245,000

While it gained 0.2% before these figures, the Dollar Index, which measures the evolution of the greenback against a basket of currencies, fell 0.1% to 89.71.
