This Tuesday, July 30 in Abidjan, the Azito Thermal Power Plant experienced a very special atmosphere. Around 9:25 a.m., a fire alarm was triggered following an oil spill in the compartment of its steam turbine. After evacuating the personnel to the assembly point, this electricity-producing company urgently deployed its Internal Operation Plan, POI

6 minutes later, a detachment of military firefighters is already on the scene to bring strong hands to the internal security teams in order to control the fire as quickly as possible and limit the damage as much as possible. They were later joined by the Urgent Medical Aid Service, SAMU, the Ivorian Anti-Pollution Center, CIAPOL, the Police and the Gendarmerie.

At exactly 9:57 a.m., the disaster was brought under control. The report shows 3 victims, including one unconscious, quickly taken care of by the military firefighters. This fire also caused the shutdown of the steam turbine. Without however impacting the production capacity of this Thermal Power Plant.

This Internal Operation Plan aims to assess both the procedures for emergency situations and the capacity of the agents in the event of a disaster. An annual drill is mandatory for any company likely to be the victim of a major fire.

“ This exercise is for us the most important event of the year. Without the preservation of our work tool, without the security of our environment, our agents and our neighbors, our activity cannot continue ” affirms Honorat Boua, General Manager of Azito O&M.

Before adding that “ Azito plays a major role in the electrical system of the sub-region because it houses installations of the Thermal Power Plant, the Ivorian Electricity Company, Foxtrot and PETROCI. When this site is threatened, it is not only Côte d'Ivoire that is in danger but the whole sub-region. This is why Azito has been classified as a strategic site by the National Security Council” .

The Azito Thermal Power Plant is a company that produces 35% of the electricity consumed during peak hours in Côte d'Ivoire. Second energy force of the country, it produces today 420 Megawatts and should soon increase to 450 Megawatts. Within two years, with an additional 250 megawatts, its capacity will be increased to 700 megawatts. This will make it the largest plant in Côte d'Ivoire.
