Tunisia's main monetary indicators continue to improve despite the delicate economic situation. This is especially the case for foreign currency reserves0 Until Friday, August 14, 2020, they reached 144 days of import, which is equivalent to 21.733 billion dinars. This is what emerges from data from the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).
For comparison, during the same period in 2019, we were at around 97 days of import (13.9 billion dinars). For some observers, the improvement in foreign exchange reserves is explained, in particular, by the loans that were contracted by Tunisia during the health crisis. Indeed, the classic levers that generate currency, such as tourism – almost at a standstill – and the export of phosphates, are at half mast due to the health crisis linked to the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV -2 or COVID-19).
On the foreign exchange market side, it is the same trend for the Tunisian dinar against the currencies of Tunisia's main economic partners - European Union and United States -.
Thus, 1 euro is equivalent to 3.23 dinars and 1 dollar is equivalent to 2.75 dinars (August 12, 2020). Another indicator mentioned by the BCT: the refinancing of commercial banks by the BCT. The latter reached 10.583 billion dinars on Friday August 14, 2020, against 15 billion dinars in August 2020.
