Consumer prices rose 2.2% in August compared to the previous month, mainly due to the increase in the cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages, according to the National Agency for statistics and demography.

''This development is mainly the result of a 4.2% increase in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages and, to a lesser extent of that of 0.5%, health services'', underlines the ANSD in its note on the analysis of the harmonized consumer price index.

The document consulted at the APS cites among the factors of such an evolution the increase of 0.3% in the prices of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics and of 0.2% in the cost of miscellaneous goods and services.

In annual variation, consumer prices increased by 3% while the average annual inflation rate was 2%, reports the ANSD.

She points out that core inflation fell by 0.1% monthly and rose by 1.3% year on year.

“Local and imported products increased in price by 2.8% and 0.4% respectively in August 2020 compared to the previous month. In annual variation, they increased respectively by 3.8% and 1.7%'', notes the report.
