The Chief of Staff of the Minister of Finance, Bassirou Sarr revealed, based on data from the latest report by the National Financial Information Processing Unit (CENTIF), that: “928 reports of suspicious transactions were recorded in 2024. A large majority, or 83%, come from banks and financial institutions. The same goes for the 42.7 million declarations of cash transactions exceeding the regulatory threshold of 15 million CFA francs.” According to the information, this evolution demonstrates an increasingly assertive culture of compliance within the national financial system. According to Bassirou Sarr, “2,172 requests for national information (DINs) were sent to key actors (administrations, supervisory authorities, etc.), as well as forty-five (45) requests for foreign information (DIE) made to financial intelligence units in other countries”. According to the chief of staff of the Minister of Finance and Budget, “these figures illustrate the growing capacity of our system to produce quality financial intelligence.”
In addition, GIABA CEO Edwin Harris warned against the rise of cybercrime. According to him, attacks targeting business emails, Ponzi scams, and mobile money scams are all practices used to hide illicit funds. He also identified existing vulnerabilities in the legal and operational frameworks of States, which he considered urgently needed to be addressed
