Germany, reputed to be the most efficient in the world in terms of renewable energies, openly expresses its interest in Madagascar's natural assets. The German government and private sector want to cooperate with the Big Island.
Energy, environment and education will certainly be the subject of close cooperation between Madagascar and Germany, following the meeting between German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and President Andry Rajoelina in Geneva. As for the energy sector, Minister Vonjy Andriamanga in charge of Energy, Water and Hydrocarbons has started preparations on the ground using a pragmatic approach with concrete projects. During a mission from June 12 to 14, he met the main German ministerial players in cooperation as well as the managers of German private companies. According to his remarks, exchanges on investment opportunities in Madagascar were on the program of meetings with German companies working in the energy and waste treatment sector. Some of these companies are already present in Madagascar and others are looking for new markets. Thus, the German private sector has shown a strong desire to invest in the Big Island, according to information relayed by the Malagasy delegation.
Cooperation. Ministerial meetings, in particular between the German Federal Ministry for Cooperation and Development, the German Development Bank KFW and the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Malagasy delegation made it possible to present the new dynamic vision of the Government, as well as the axes of current cooperation to be intensified, including the environment, energy and decentralization. Of course, the stakeholders discussed areas for future cooperation to be expanded, in particular technical training, water, and particularly reforestation, which aroused everyone's interest. Admittedly, a wind of optimism in terms of bilateral cooperation and direct investment emerged at the end of these various talks. It should be noted that the mission of the Malagasy Minister on German soil was made within the framework of the invitation of "Afrika-Verein" (Federal Association of German companies and institutions for foreign trade with Africa ) at the German-African Business Day in Berlin, which took place on June 13th.
Blue economy . With its natural opportunities and advantages, Madagascar actively participated in this 6th forum focusing on the blue economy for growth in Africa. As a panelist on the theme of private sector investment opportunities and prospects for the industrial revolution in the blue economy in Africa, Minister Vonjy Andriamanga underlined the major need to protect our 5,000 km long coastal wealth, and to develop our considerable potential in an exclusive economic zone of more than one million km². For GIZ Antananarivo, “Afrika-Verein”, this mission of the Malagasy delegation to Germany is a success and will bear fruit.
