The NGO "Publish what you finance" ranked, on June 24, the African Development Bank ( AfDB ) 4th out of 47 development institutions active in the world in its Aid Transparency Index (Ati) .

The index places the Bank in the “highest” category for transparency, on par with other institutions such as the World Bank , the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) .

"As large amounts of aid are reallocated to deal with the emergency response to Covid-19, transparency in international aid is more important than ever," said the NGO's chief executive. Publish what you fund,” Gary Forster, who has published this annual index since 2011.

The ranking is based on several criteria, including finances and budgets, basic information data, organizational planning and performance.

In the new index, which covers the year 2019, the AfDB scored 95.5 out of 100 for transparency. This represents, according to the NGO's evaluators, a "significant improvement" compared to its 2018 score.

Forster, it is encouraging to see that aid data, now shared by many of the world's leading aid agencies, is becoming more quantity, quality and timeliness.

“As our collaboration enables us to fill gaps in the aid data landscape, we are exploring with growing interest how best to meet the demand for data and the participation in obtaining it,” said underlined the boss of this NGO

Swazi Tshabalala, Acting First Vice-President of the African Development Bank Group and Chief Financial Officer, welcomed the performance. According to her, this ranking “crowns” the institution's commitment to transparency.

According to Ms. Tshabalala, with a volume of funding as large as that allocated to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, it is crucial that citizens of member countries know where and when the AfDB is investing in the development of the Africa.
