) The latest report published by Transparency International (TI) ranks Nigeria 146th
place out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index in 2019.
The report released on Thursday showed Nigeria slipped two places and scored 26 out of 100 points, dropping 27
points he had maintained since 2017.
In the 2018 index, Nigeria rose four places from 148 to 144.
Channels Television report ranks 180 countries and territories by levels of industry corruption
public, in the opinion of experts and businessmen, on a scale from 0 to 100. According to this ranking, zero
means "very corrupt" and 100 means very clean.
“Our analysis also suggests that reducing big money in politics and promoting
inclusive political decision-making are key to fighting corruption. Of the fraud that
occurs at the highest levels of government to petty corruption that blocks access to public services from
basics, such as health care and education, citizens are fed up with leaders and institutions
corrupt,” the report said.
It ranks sub-Saharan Africa as the worst performing region, while Western Europe is the
best performing region.
Nigeria is ranked the fourth most corrupt country among the 19 countries in the West African region.
The report added that Transparency International President Delia Ferreira Rubio urged the
Nigerian government to urgently address what she described as the corrupt role of big business
sums of money in the financing of political parties and the undue influence they exert on the systems
policies.
