The report on the evolution of the foreign exchange market/2021, published by the National Bank of Angola, on its website indicates that the banking financial institutions purchased 7.9 billion dollars worth of foreign currency in 2021.

The purchases were made from the main sources of foreign exchange, including $3.3 billion from the oil sector, Angola's main source of income. Of the amount purchased, approximately USD 3.1 billion was acquired from the National Treasury, USD 820.5 million from the diamond sector and USD 675.7 million from the National Bank of Angola, representing nearly 8 .5% of the total purchased by banks from these sources, via the Bloomberg FXGO electronic platform.

In 2021, the foreign exchange market was marked by the stability and appreciation of the national currency against the main international currencies, in a scenario where the supply of foreign currencies exceeded the demand from commercial banks. During the year in question, the exchange rate of the Kwanza against the US dollar reflected the appreciation of the national currency, from 656.2 USD/AOA in December 2020 to 555.0 USD/AOA the last year, corresponding to an appreciation of the kwanza of 18.2%.
