About forty investigative journalists from the West African region have been taking part, since Monday, February 21, 2022, in a regional workshop on investigative journalism on economic and financial crimes. Organized in hybrid mode by the Intergovernmental Group for Action against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), this training is part of the capacity building of journalists in investigations related to economic and financial crimes. .

The three-day training aims, among others, to create a strong alliance with the media in a concerted manner for effective dissemination of anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) issues; to inform the media of regional initiatives, in particular of GIABA's activities and to improve the network of journalists which would promote the proper dissemination of information on AML/CFT systems. In his opening address, the Director General of GIABA, Judge Kimelabalou ABA indicated that the media remains under-exploited in cases of corruption and other financial crimes, despite being a key source of detection. Since 2009, GIABA has rightly been carrying out awareness-raising actions aimed at media professionals. It should be noted that money laundering, the financing of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction continue to threaten peace and security and jeopardize sustainable development in the ECOWAS region.
