The Eurostoxx 50 opens at 4,136.91 points (-1.15%), the CAC 40 at 6,965.88 points (-0.82%), the DAX 40 at 15,318.95 points (-1.32% ), the FTSE 100 at 7,466.07 points (-1.17%), the SMI at 12,104.44 points (-0.60%), the AEX at 744.26 points (-1.26%), the BEL 20 at 4,047.55 points (-1.41%), IBEX 35 at 8,609.80 points (-1.10%), DJIA at 34,725.47 points (+1.65%), Nasdaq at 13,770.57 points (+3.13%), the S&P 500 at 4,431.85 points (+2.43%) and the Nikkei 225 at 27,001.98 points (+1.07%).
With regard to exchange rates, the variation compared to the closing in New York indicates that the EUR/USD is displayed at 1.1166 (+0.15%), the EUR/JPY at 128.87 (+0.32%) and USD/JPY at 115.42 (+0.17%).
European equity markets are expected to open higher on Monday, on the heels of Friday night's gains on Wall Street after the release of robust corporate results. At 7:35 a.m., the CAC 40 futures contract gained 83 points, or 1.2%, according to data from broker IG Markets. The contract on the DAX 40 gained 206 points, or 1.3%, and that on the FTSE 100 rose by 51 points, or 0.7%. However, investors can expect continued market volatility as the Federal Reserve (Fed) seeks to rein in inflation, says Scott Clemons, head of investment strategy at Brown Brothers private bank Harriman .
On Monday, investors will be watching the first estimate of the euro zone's gross domestic product (GDP) in the fourth quarter, as well as inflation figures in Germany in January. In Asia, the main indices are moving in the green on Monday. The Nikkei index gained 1.1% in Tokyo. The Hang Seng of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange also took 1.1% at the end of the session. Mainland China stock exchanges will remain closed all week for Lunar New Year celebrations. The official PMI for the manufacturing sector fell to 50.1 in January, from 50.3 in December, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics. An index above 50 signals an expansion in activity. The PMI index established by Caixin and IHS Markit for its part fell in January to 49.1, its lowest level since February 2020, at the height of the health crisis in China. In December, the index had reached 50.9.
The yield on the 10-year US Treasury bond rose Monday morning as investors remained focused on expected interest rate hikes in the US this year. The Treasury bond yield curve flattened last week, with the yield on the two-year note rising 0.177 percentage points, to 1.170%, and that of the ten-year note rising just 0.032 percentage points, at 1.779%.
The euro advanced against the dollar and the yen on Monday amid improving risk appetite.
Oil prices continued to rise on Monday morning, after posting their sixth consecutive weekly increase last week. At 7:25 am, the April contract on Brent North Sea took 1.01 dollar, at 89.52 dollars a barrel. The Nymex-listed light sweet crude (WTI) March contract was $1.03 at $87.85 a barrel.
