Around 9:45 p.m. GMT, the greenback gained 0.65% against the single currency, to 0.8851 euro for one dollar. After a last week of 2021 at half mast, the "greenback" also advanced against the pound sterling, the Swiss franc or the Canadian dollar. Its parity with the yen even approached the highest of almost five years touched on November 24, at 115.52 yen for a dollar.
The two-year rate went back above 0.80%, a level it had not seen since March 3, 2020, i.e. at the start of the pandemic.
