As a prelude to the meeting of ministers in charge of agriculture and trade of WAEMU member states, a meeting of experts in charge of the said sector opened in Cotonou on Monday, December 13, 2021. It is a question of reflecting on appropriate measures to increase the use of chemical fertilizers in the agricultural sector for the purpose of better yields in the Union.

To feed people, you have to feed the soil. In a community agricultural context increasingly marked by low yields of basic crops, due to the fanciful rise in the cost of purchasing quality agricultural inputs in the Union, the WAEMU States want to take resolutions to make agriculture a real opportunity for growth. In this logic, as a prelude to the meeting of ministers in charge of agriculture and trade in the Union, scheduled to be held this Tuesday, December 14, 2021, the experts in charge of the sector in WAEMU have started since yesterday reflections on ways to improve access to chemical fertilizers for agricultural actors in the Uemoa space. Specifically, it is for the commissioned experts to examine the fertilizer needs of food crops and cash crops for the next agricultural campaign in the region; to analyze the measures to facilitate access to fertilizers at the level of the Member States of the Union; to identify effective and harmonized measures to facilitate access to fertilizers in the current context of soaring world prices; to define a mechanism for implementing harmonized measures to facilitate access to fertilizers in the UEMOA space.
