Nigeria is stepping up its efforts against maritime piracy, which is peaking in the Gulf of Guinea region. Thus, the Nigerian Navy last Sunday deployed a Special Boat Service unit consisting of 10 warships, two helicopters, 1,500 troops and other assets as part of a special military exercise.

This fleet will conduct exercises ranging from counter-piracy operations; protection of offshore oil and gas installations, fleet maneuvers, communications and artillery. The fleet will also conduct maritime interdiction operations, such as shipboard search and seizure, opposite boarding as well as search and rescue operations.
