The bishops of the Catholic Church meet on Tuesday in Lourdes for their annual meeting, largely devoted to the follow-up to be given to the shock report of the Sauvé commission on the extent of pedocrime in the institution. For seven days, these 120 prelates will devote almost half of their work to "the fight against violence and sexual assault on minors", according to the program given to the press. Initially scheduled for six days, the assembly therefore opens a day earlier for a "time and work of reception" of the report of the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church (Ciase), a month after its publication . The numbers are frightening. Some 216,000 people over the age of 18 have been subjected to violence or sexual assault during their minority by clerics (priests or deacons) or men and women religious since 1950. The report estimates that around 3,000 the number of predators involved in seventy years.
At climate conference, world leaders urged to 'save humanity'
Queen Elizabeth II in a video message urged world leaders gathered for COP26 in Glasgow (Scotland) to make "common cause" to tackle climate change and "solve the most insurmountable problems". Before her, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres had done the same. The world must act now to "save humanity" from the catastrophic impacts of global warming, he said to around 120 leaders from all continents and thousands of delegates and observers gathered for the two-week COP26. "It's time to say + enough +", he had launched. "Enough of brutalizing biodiversity. Enough of killing ourselves with carbon. Enough of treating nature like a toilet. Enough of burning and drilling and mining ever deeper. We're digging our own graves."
Eric Adams, ex-black police officer, big favorite to win the mayor of New York
Except for a twist, a black and anti-racist former police officer from New York, Eric Adams, should be elected mayor of the American megalopolis on Tuesday, an extraordinary journey for this poor child from Brooklyn, a young delinquent who has become a strong politician of the Democratic party. The position is reputed to be the most dangerous after that of President of the United States: in fact, the Democrat Bill de Blasio will go away on December 31 at heights of unpopularity although he has, among other things, managed to release a city of more than eight million inhabitants from the chaos of the pandemic (more than 34,000 dead). If Democrat Eric Adams, 61, defeats his Republican rival Curtis Sliwa, 67, as expected, he will be only the second black mayor in the history of the economic and cultural capital of the United States, after David Dinkins ( 1990-93).
IN SHORT
A skyscraper under construction collapsed in Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria, killing at least four people and injuring several, but the toll could greatly increase, with dozens of workers still trapped under the rubble.
More than 5 million deaths from Covid-19 have been officially recorded worldwide, but the current evolution of the pandemic remains highly contrasted from one continent to another.
Rafael Nadal, who has only played two matches since his defeat in the Roland-Garros semi-finals in June due to a foot injury, said he wanted to return to the circuit in December in Abu Dhabi by aiming for the Open from Australia in January.
