In October 2020, the Central Bank had ordered the national telecommunications regulatory authorities to put an end to the practices of presenting, using or operating telephone units in FCFA.
In its report on "Payment services by electronic money in CEMAC in 2020", the Beac notes that telecom operators (still called telcos) and certain populations "confuse the FCFA currency and the telephone units used as a means equivalent payment of FCFA”. The institution stresses that this practice persists in this year 2021, despite the questioning of mobile operators operating in Cameroon, in a letter dated October 29, 2020, which correspondence was then sent "to all national authorities regulation of Cemac telecommunications”.
