The Gafi must take a decision during its plenary session from October 18 to 21 on whether or not to keep Botswana on its gray list. Despite three years of cooperation with the Financial Action Task Force, a global policeman in the fight against money laundering, Botswana could see its stay on the international organization's gray list extend. Since October 2018, Botswana has been on the famous FATF gray list of countries with deficiencies in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism. Based on the work of this institution, the European Union, in turn, included Botswana in its list of high-risk third countries in 2020 (AI of 02/12/20).
Enormous efforts have been made by President Mokgweetsi Masisi to play the good students: more than 30 laws passed since 2018 following the prescriptions of the institution. The main reason for the Gafi's reservations about removing Botswana from the gray list: the lack of concrete results in the application of its recommendations, in particular those relating to the prosecution of major public figures involved in money laundering cases.
