Beyond the closing of borders, the creation of illegal checkpoints is an evil that plagues trade between Benin and Nigeria. On the Lagos-Sèmè road, there are now 52 checkpoints.

The Lagos-Sèmè border occupies an important place both in the lives of the people who live there and of the two countries that the border separates. Recording huge daily movements of people, goods and services, the Sèmè-Krake border, located between the Republic of Benin and Nigeria, is one of the busiest land borders in Africa. But passengers are being tested by the establishment of 52 checkpoints by security officials and others who take advantage of the flippancy of governments to impose the ransom. Noting that these mostly illegal checkpoints were set up by several units of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Nigerian Army, Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Quarantine Service and National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). Ships & Ports specialist says Nigeria lacks commitment to trade facilitation.
