The aim of this report is to report to FATF officials on the progress made by the court in eliminating the deficiencies in its financial system, which have so far not allowed it to align with the standards put in place by the FATF to ensure respect for the integrity of the international financial system. “This is a progress report,” said the Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance, Mahen Seeruttun. The submission of this report on Friday is one of several measures taken by the government to leave the FATF grey list and the European Union blacklist. The Mauritian court is accused of failing to comply with the means at its disposal to effectively combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism. These are two crimes that are considered to have the potential to undermine the integrity of the international financial system
.The regular submission of progress reports is only one aspect of the obligations Mauritius must fulfill to leave the FATF and European Union grey and black lists respectively. In exactly one month and 19 days, starting on 27 July, during this three-day inspection visit scheduled for 13 and 15 September, the mission of the FATF experts will be to verify on the spot whether the measures officially announced by the court in relation to what it has undertaken to correct the deficiencies noted in the means put in place to combat the two abovementioned scourges are being applied in practice. The Mauritian jurisdiction will initiate a a decisive step in the future of its financial services sector. If the experts say they are satisfied, Mauritius can breathe a sigh of relief because it will mean that during the work of the next edition of the FATF plenary session, the experts will recommend that the name of the Mauritian jurisdiction be removed from the FATF grey list, which lists the jurisdictions that the European Union
should not trust.
