France: the new anti-Covid bill is on track

The Council of Ministers in France is due to adopt a bill on Monday containing new anti-coronavirus measures, including the extension of the health pass, before a stepped-up review by Parliament this week, under pressure from the resumption of the Covid-19 epidemic. The text is presented at a time when, without waiting for the law, the French have already massively returned to vaccinodromes. It will be discussed during the week while the anger of anti-health passes is rising, as they demonstrated on Saturday, and poor health figures are multiplying. The number of new daily cases has surged, according to figures published Sunday by Public Health France, at a time when the government was sounding the “alarm” in the face of this upsurge. The health agency reported 12,532 cases detected in 24 hours, the highest level for a Sunday since mid-May. A week after President Emmanuel Macron's announcements, on which he is playing a large part of his credit with a view to the 2022 presidential election, the bill must be adopted in the morning by the Council of Ministers.

The Tokyo Olympics facing the fear of a cluster in the Olympic Village

Two players from the South African soccer team and a member of the staff, living in the Olympic Village at the Tokyo Olympics, tested positive for Covid-19, raising fears of an outbreak five days before the opening ceremony. On Sunday morning, the Tokyo-2020 organizing committee announced that three positive cases of Covid-19 within the “same country and the same sport” had been identified in the Olympic Village, without giving further details. South Africa is set to face Japan, France and Mexico in the group stage of the men's Olympic tournament, which starts on Thursday, on the eve of the official start of the Games.

IN SHORT

Reuters photographer Danish Siddiqui was buried Sunday night in New Delhi, two days after he was killed in Afghanistan while covering fighting between Afghan security forces and the Taliban near a border crossing with Pakistan.

One of the jerseys made for Zinédine Zidane for the 1998 World Cup final was sold at auction for more than $100,000 in Los Angeles, less than an old LeBron James jersey for half a million dollars, Julien's Auctions announced.
